I've lost much of my nitpickiness the past couple of years for a different reason. I've been scoring the standardized writing tests taken by American schoolchildren. I've reached the point where I can decipher words even when facing the most atrocious handwriting. What scares me most is the way concepts and methods of presenting an argument that would have baffled me or annoyed me when I first started the job have begun to make perfect sense.

I just took a one-week trip to Japan for an academic conference, and I had the same experience with the funny translations (I found this site by searching for "poet your mind to the world free your mind to the deli" because I saw it in Tokyo); that is, it quickly lost its novelty and I just felt like I was making fun of someone else's innocence. Now that I'm back in North America, of course, it's all hilarious again. But I still have a twinge of "but if you're only laughing, you are missing part of the point".
